FrontPage Publishing Guide
- Open FrontPage and load the Web you want to publish into the FrontPage
Explorer.
- When working in FrontPage Explorer, it helps to stay in "Folder View."
This makes it easy to see what is going on with all the folders and
files. If you're not sure what view you're in, look at the left-hand
side of your screen, where it says "Views." Underneath the word "Views,"
click on the folder icon that says the word "Folders" below it. You
should now be in Folder View.
- At the top of the screen, click on the "File" menu. Then click on
the "Publish FrontPage Web" menu item. When the Publish window opens,
it should read, "Publish FrontPage Web to:"
- Make sure that if this is the first time you are publishing this site,
you keep the "Publish changed pages only" box un-checked. This box should
be un-checked the first time you publish your website. After the initial
publishing, you should have this box checked, so that FrontPage does
not waste time overwriting HTML pages that have not been edited.
- Click on the "More Webs" button. You will now be asked to "specify
the location to which you want to publish your FrontPage Web." Type
in "http://yourdomainname.com" and click "OK."
- When prompted, type in your username and password for your Redglue
server. Click the "OK" button and FrontPage should take over from there.
A progress indicator will appear in the status bar in the bottom left
corner. When it is finished, it should say "Published to http://yourdomainname.com"
What username and password should I use when I publish with FrontPage?
When prompted for a username and password, make sure you use the username
and password that Redglue gave you, and NOT
the username and password you set for "authoring permissions in the root
Web" when you first installed Microsoft FrontPage.
How do I publish for the first time?
The FrontPage server extensions must be installed before you try to publish
your Web. If the extensions are not installed when you try to publish,
the Web publishing wizard will open and ask you for FTP information (FTP
main directory name & file path). If it prompts you for this FTP information,
contact support and have them
check to make sure the extensions are properly installed. You should not
have to give any FTP information to publish your Web.
Why not just hit the "Publish" button on the tool bar?
DO NOT just press the "Publish" button on the tool bar. When you press
this button, FrontPage will publish the current Web in the FrontPage Explorer
to the last URL location that FrontPage published Web pages (which could
just be your hard drive.) It is good practice to tell it what URL to publish
to each time. In addition, if you are hosting several Webs in FrontPage
and you are publishing to different URLs, you will ensure that you are
publishing to the intended location.
How do I make real-time changes?
It is a matter of personal preference whether or not someone wants to
make real-time changes in FrontPage. However, it is usually a good idea
to make all changes to your Web pages in your local copy and publish from
there. By doing this, you will always have the most current version on
your machine. This way, you will not lose track of the changes you have
made on the server.
The Steps to Making Live, "Real-time" Changes
- Connect to the Internet as you normally would (Netscape Navigator
or Microsoft Internet Explorer). You can minimize your browser once
you are connected.
- Open Microsoft FrontPage.
- Click on the "File" menu. Then click on "Open Web."
- Make sure the "Open an existing FrontPage Web" box is checked, then
click on the "More Webs" button.
- Where it says "Select a Web server or disk location" type in the name
of the Web you want to make real-time changes in, such as http://mydomain.com.
- Click on the "List Webs" button or press the "enter" key on your keyboard.
Where it reads "FrontPage Webs found at location:" should
appear in the space. Then just click the "OK" button.
- FrontPage Explorer will open with the "live" Web loaded. Double-click
to open each page you want to edit or change. Edit your Web pages, click
on the "File" menu, then click the "Close" button (in the FrontPage
Editor). You will be asked if you want to save your changes to that
page, click "Yes." FrontPage will save your changes "live" by publishing
your changes. Your screen will then return to the FrontPage Explorer.
- When you are finished, click on the "File" menu and choose "Close
FrontPage Web."
NOTE: It is strongly suggested that you write down each change that you
make and go back to your local copy and make the changes to it as well.
Otherwise you will publish over your new "live" changes with an older version. |
