AUTO RESPONDER
An auto responder is a type of e-mail that automatically replies with a standard message to anyone who sends mail to it. They can be used as e-mail brochures to easily disseminate information to interested customers about specific products, new product announcements, or the company. They can also inform the sender that a message has been received. For instance, if you set up a vacation auto responder, you could turn it on when you leave, and anyone that sends mail to your address while you're gone will get an immediate response stating that you are out of town. Businesses use auto responders for getting more out to interested customers.

DNS ALIASING
The Internet relies on Domain Name Servers (DNSs) to translate domain names into IP addresses. Every Web hosting company must have a domain name server. However, we provide a service to our customers where we will create an alias for our name server that will make it look as if you have your own name server. This way, anyone who chooses to run a whois on your site, will perceive that you host your own site, because Redglue's name will not show up anywhere (ie. "NS1.yourname.com" instead of "NS1.redglue.net"). This feature is important to those who plan to resell space, host other domains on their own virtual or dedicated server, and hide the Redglue name.

DOMAIN NAME
A domain name is much like a trademark or a license. It allows people to find a website by name instead of by number (IP address), thus providing the website a more professional look. Plus, domain names are like fingerprints-there can only be one of any domain name in the world. If "http://www.myweb.com" is already registered by another company, then you must find a name that is not yet registered. Domain names can be 67 characters long in total. The length includes the ".com" at the end but does not include the "http://www" at the beginning.

HTML
HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language. HTML is a collection of platform-independent styles (indicated by markup tags) that define the various components of a World Wide Web document. HYPERTEXT LINKS
A hypertext link is a method of embedding a URL into an object, such as a segment of text, or an image. When this object is clicked on, the browser then addresses the embedded URL to retrieve its WWW document. As a general rule of thumb, most colored and underlined words, and many graphics, are linked and can be clicked on.

INTERNET
The Internet is the catch-all word used to describe the massive world-wide network of computers. The word "Internet" literally means "network of networks". In itself, the Internet is comprised of thousands of smaller regional networks scattered throughout the globe. On any given day it connects roughly 200 million users in over 100 countries. It is the communication backbone that ties together computers from all around the world commonly known as the "Information Superhighway." The World Wide Web is a part of the Internet that comprises a system of Internet servers that are formatted in HTML. One may access the Internet through a computer and an Internet Service Provider (ISP).

INTERNIC
Internic, or Network Solutions, was the original domain name licensing authority for the United States. They previously had a monopoly on domain name registration that was granted to them by the U.S. Department of Commerce, until November, 1999, when competition was enforced and they were required to share their database and registry services with anyone who qualified as a registrar. ICANN is the newly appointed organization that oversees domain name registration issues.

SEARCH ENGINE
Search engines are consistently ranked among the most popular sites on the Internet. This is because they are programs designed to scour the Web for specific keywords, and return a list of where these keywords are to be found. If you aren't sure of where to find something on the Web, search engines are the best place to start. They vary in style, but most just need you to choose a keyword or keywords, and then they find the related topics for you. Chances are, if you have been on the Web before, you have already used at least one of more popular search engines: AltaVista, Excite, HotBot, InfoSeek, Lycos, WebCrawler, or Yahoo!

SMART AUTO RESPONDER
A smart auto responder is a highly evolved derivative of a regular auto responder in that it follows up its initial response with a user-specifiable number of follow-up emails. Smart auto responders are similar to standard auto responders, but smart auto responders can send multiple e-mails at varying intervals of time, from one hour apart to many days. Smart auto responders are a useful tool if you ever need to time delay a set of e-mails or attachments.

SPAM
"Spam" mail is the practice of sending massive amounts of e-mail promotions or advertisements (and scams) to people that have not asked for it. Many times, spam e-mail lists are created by "harvesting" e-mail addresses from discussion boards and groups, chat rooms, IRC, and Web pages. Spam has an extremely negative connotation and most users find it annoying and a waste of resources. Redglue strictly prohibits sending spam from accounts on our servers.

SSL
SSL is an acronym for secure sockets layer. SSL protects transmissions over the World Wide Web from spectators by encrypting the data while it gets transmitted over the Internet. SSL works through a certificate that authenticates a certain domain. With this certificate, secure transmissions on the server are "certified" and valid. Both Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer support SSL, and many websites use this protocol to obtain confidential user information, such as credit card numbers. Web pages that require an SSL connection start with https: instead of http:.

Typically, a URL will be listed at the top of the page in a browser as the "location" or "address" of where exactly you are virtually situated.

VIRTUAL HOSTING
Virtual hosting is a powerful feature available with all server options at Redglue. You can virtually host domains that point to the same website, or you can host domains that point to completely separate websites.

VIRTUAL SERVER
A virtual server is a Web server that shares computer resources with other virtual servers on a single machine. Virtual Web servers are a way of providing low-cost Web hosting services. Instead of requiring a separate computer for each server, dozens of virtual servers can co-reside on the same computer. This allows a single machine to act as many separate systems. It is also continuously connected to the Internet to allow anyone with a browser (Netscape/IE/AOL) to connect with the server and retrieve its data.
